In the last article, I explained that routine and adequate sleep is essential for health. Today we build on that foundation by examining the impact the morning routine has on health. The first 20 minutes of each day have a major impact on the rest of the day. For example, when we start the day checking social media, we end up spending more time scrolling the networks and end up with more anxiety and elevated vital signs. However, when we start the day with exercise, we enjoy a better metabolism and more self-esteem. And the day we begin meditation, concentration becomes easier and more serene.
For millennia, our ancestors began each day the same way. And in a relatively short amount of time, things changed very drastically. And it has been difficult for our bodies to adapt to all the changes we have created. All this has a massive impact on health. Although many of these changes are part of modern life and must be assimilated, there are small decisions that can give us back the power to be proactive instead of reactive. A morning routine is the best way to start the day healthy.
The following is from my personal routine which is based on modern science, traditional Chinese Medicine, and Ayurveda: When I wake up, I give thanks for starting a new day. This simple act of gratitude has documented repercussions for health and well-being. Then I go to the toilet. It is important to remove all waste from the previous day. Then, I wash my hands and then my face. I go to the kitchen and, while I prepare breakfast for my children, I have a cup of tea or warm water to cleanse my body. I take a moment to stretch, even if it’s just for five minutes. Also, during the early morning hours, I try to expose myself to natural light. The combination of all these steps creates multiple benefits for both physical and psychological health and sets the pattern for a positive day and a healthy life.
